What is a Barrel Coupler?
The keg coupler, also known as the keg tap, connects the air line (CO2 or nitrogen tank) and beer line to your keg so everything flows properly. It uses compressed air from a CO2 or nitrogen tank to push beer out of the vent system and into the glass. If your beer keg coupler isn't connected properly, you won't be able to pour anything.
Types of Cartridge Couplers
One important thing to know about barrel couplers is that there is no "one size fits all" option. Depending on the type of beer you're going to be drinking or the origin of your beer, you'll want to make sure you're using the correct type of coupler.
System D: Also known as the Sankey Keg Coupler, this is the standard keg coupler for the vast majority of North American beers, including craft beers.
U System: If you plan on drinking Guinness, Harp, Kilkenny and other select beers from the UK, this is the type of coupler you need.
S system: Similar to the D system coupler, the S system coupler is also called the European Sankey coupler. It fits popular European imports including Heineken, Becks and Amstel.
A System: The A System coupler is designed for use with German beers including Warsteiner, Paulaner, and Spaten, and slides over the top of the barrel stem. It is also known as a German slider coupler.
G System: For use with popular British beer brands such as Bass and Boddington’s, the stem on G System kegs is round with three flats.
M-System: Similar to the A-System coupler, the M-System locks into place by sliding on top of the barrel. It is compatible with many German beers including Schneider, Aventinus, Einbecker and Veltins.
KeyKeg: The KeyKeg or K system is a new device that uses single-use plastic buckets for kegs. The KeyKeg system is gaining popularity in some European and American breweries.
