Keg Coupler

What Is Keg Coupler

Keg couplers are a key component of your kegerator or draft beer system. It’s the piece that unlocks the golden treasure stored inside a keg of beer and sends it on its journey to your taps. A keg coupler, also known as a keg tap connects the air line (the CO2 or Nitrogen tank) and the beer line to your keg so that everything flows properly. It uses the compressed air from the CO2 or nitrogen tank to push the beer out of your draft system and into your glass. If your beer keg coupler isn't attached properly, you won't be pouring anything out.

Advantages of Keg Coupler

Improved draft beer quality
This device allows you to control the flow rate of the beer, which can help maintain the carbonation and freshness of the beer. A lower flow rate can help prevent foaming and ensure that the beer is served at the correct temperature.
Increased efficiency
It allows you to quickly and easily tap a keg, which can save time and increase the efficiency of your draft beer system.
Greater versatility
Different types of couplers are compatible with different types of kegs, which can give you greater versatility when choosing and serving different types of beers.
Easy maintenance
A beer keg coupler has components that are easy to clean and maintain which can reduce the time and cost of maintaining your draft beer system.
Cost-effective
A high-quality tap can be a cost-effective solution, as it will last longer and require less maintenance than a low-quality one.
Better control
A connector with a pressure adjustment knob allows you to adjust the pressure and flow rate of the beer, giving you greater control over the dispensing process.

Types of Keg Couplers

D system
Also known as a sankey keg coupler, this is the standard keg coupler that will work the large majority of north american beers, including craft brews.

U system
This is the style of coupler you’ ll need if you plan on tapping guinness, harp, kilkenny and other select beers from the uk.

S system
Similar to the d system coupler, an s system coupler is also known as a european sankey coupler. It works with popular european imports, including heineken, becks and amstel.

A system
Designed for use with german beers, including warsteiner, paulaner and spaten, an a system coupler slides over the top of the keg stem. It is also referred to as a german slider coupler.

G system
For use with popular uk brands of beer, such as bass and boddington’ s, the valve stem on a g system keg is shaped like a circle with three flat sides.

M system
Similar to the a system coupler, an m system locks into place by sliding over the top of the keg. It is compatible with a number of german beers, including schneider, aventinus, einbecker and veltins.

Keykeg
The keykeg or k system is a new setup for keg tapping that uses single-use plastic kegs. Keykeg systems are gaining in popularity with select european breweries and us winemakers.

Things to Note When Using a Keg Coupler

If you're using the wrong coupler, you may notice that you're having to force the coupler to attach to the keg. The right-sized coupler should attach relatively easily. Be sure to match the beer you're using with our keg coupler list. Seeing bubbles or foam leaking from the top of the keg means your coupler is not attached securely. Disengage the coupler by pulling the handle out then up, disconnect it from the keg and then try again. If attaching the coupler securely doesn’t fix the issue then be sure that your rubber check valve is attached properly. Many times, people throw this part out thinking that it is part of the packaging, but the rubber check valve is a critical part of your keg coupler. Also, having extra rubber washers on hand can aid in the proper attachment of the hex nut and tail piece to the lines, and can eliminate leaks when they reinforce attachments elsewhere in your system. Anytime two pieces of metal are coming in contact in your draft beer system, it's a good idea to use a rubber washer to attach them.

As with most components of a beer dispensing system, there are many small parts involved with a keg coupler. While removing them often for cleaning or maintenance is important, it can also lead to damaged or lost parts. One lost or damaged part can often make the difference between a perfect pour and a cloudy or foamy beer. Carries a selection of coupler replacement parts as well as a handy draft system repair kit so that you’ re prepared for any kind of issue. The lines attached to a standard coupler sit as high as 5"-6" above the rim of the keg when tapped. If there’ s not enough room above your keg to properly attach the coupler, then you’ ll want to use a low-profile keg coupler. The barbs for the beer and air lines protrude horizontally instead of vertically so they take up less room when attached. This can reduce the increased height above your keg added by the coupler from around 5-6" to as little as 0.75-1.25". It also offers a low-profile coupler with a rotating probe for added assistance when connecting to your keg.

How Does a Keg Coupler Work

Keg couplers are an essential component of the beverage delivery process, enabling you to serve customers exactly what they want — a perfectly chilled, delicious drink. When connected to the keg’ s valve, the components work together to ensure this process happens. It’ s imperative you use the right keg coupler though, otherwise your staff may not even be able to pour drinks. So, to keep your customers happy, the transfer from draught tap to glass needs to be flawless, and the keg coupler is a vital part of that process.

A keg coupler attaches to the fitting/valve at top of your keg, enabling pressurised gas to flow into the side of it through an air line from a CO2 or nitrogen tank. Think of the keg coupler as the key, and the fitting valve as the lock. This forces air into the keg which then allows beer to flow out through the beer line (this is essentially a tube that runs from the keg to the tap), producing a fresh pint. Remember that your keg coupler needs to be the correct type to fit the valve.

How to Clean a Keg Coupler

Disconnect the keg coupler
Turn off your CO2 or nitrogen and disconnect the coupler from the keg. Remove the air line from the coupler, set aside the Thomas valve and retainer, and then remove the beer line.

Disassemble the coupler
Start disassembling the coupler by removing the hinge pin, the lever handle, and the probe. Place all of the parts in a small container or bucket to wash them.

Washing the coupler parts
Fill the container or bucket with warm water and Power Punch cleaning solution. Scrub all of the parts with the brush, making sure to get inside the body and probe. Rinse all of the parts thoroughly once they are cleaned. Now is a good time to check that all of your seals are in good condition and replace any that aren’t.

Deep clean a beer coupler
Once the keg coupler is completely broken down. Take all the parts and put into a caustic solution and let soak for at least 15 minutes. After the soak take the parts and rinse thoroughly with cold water then dry the parts. Make sure to inspect the gaskets on the coupler. One at the end of the probe. The large gasket, or bottom seal on the key of the coupler and the two gaskets inside the housing portion of the coupler. These are pivotal to the functionality of the beer coupler and need to be inspected. Once the inspection is done, the gaskets look good. It's now time to put the coupler back together reversing the order I talked about above.

Reassemble the coupler
Start putting your coupler back together by sliding the probe into the body, and then slide the handle over the probe and align the hinge pin holes. Insert the hinge pin and tighten the nut, making sure to not overtighten. (Note: the hinge pin is supposed to turn freely). Finally, replace the valve and retainer. Once your coupler is reassembled, you can reattach your air and beer lines and hook your coupler back up to your keg.

How to Install and Replace a Keg Connector

To install your keg coupler to your kegerator, you must first attach the CO2 regulator to the CO2 cylinder. Make sure that the cylinder is filled and the valve is closed. Then, securely pair up the regulator to the CO2 cylinder. Attach the gas line to the ‘gas out’ port on the regulator and secure in place with a clamp. Then, attach the other end of the gas line to the ‘gas in’ port on the coupler. Next, attach the beer line to the liquid out port on the coupler.

Now, you are ready to connect the coupler to the keg. Ensure that the CO2 cylinder vale is in the ‘off’ position and the pull handle of the coupler is in the diagonal/upper position. Find the locking neck on the kegerator, and turn the coupler clockwise 25°. Then, pull out on the handle, push it down into the keg valve and release the handle. This will lock the coupler in place and securely attach it to the kegerator. With the coupler attached to the keg, slowly turn on the CO2 cylinder. At this point, you will hear gas flowing from the CO2 cylinder and regulator through the keg coupler and into the keg. Pull on the pressure relief valve to allow gas to vent and give you an accurate reading on the pressure gauge, then calibrate the regulator to the recommended serving pressure for your beer. You are now ready to serve your own draft beer.

When you need to change a keg of beer you're going to need to change a coupler. First, you want to line the slots on the side of the tavern heard with the tag ends on the keg collar. They'll be opposite of one another. Match these two so that the tag ends on the collar of the keg slip between the notched out area of the coupler. Next, turn the coupler clockwise until it stops rotating. This is usually about a quarter turn. Pull the lever out and push down until the lever locks in place. You now have a tapped keg of beer. To take off a coupler you will do the opposite. Pull the handle back and up. You should hear the coupler unseat the keg. Next, turn the coupler a quarter-turn counterclockwise until the coupler disengages the keg.

A Few Things to Remember About Keg Coupler

A little tip for keeping your dispensing equipment in good working order is to strip it down regularly and clean it with a good quality cleaner. Make sure you have the correct coupler on the keg and make sure all fittings are secure. The threads of the gas line may need a little PTFE plumbers tape to make sure there is no gas escaping. The temperature at which you dispense the beer is important to prevent fobbing. To assist with potential fobbing we would suggest you have an adequate length of beer line with either a flow control on the tap or a shut off valve on the liquid beer line to allow you to throttle the flow of the beer. We recommend stepping down the size of the beer line also be aware there is a lot of different types of dispensing gas, if you’ re wanting to dispense from a Guinness keg for example you’ ll need a nitrogen mix gas and a nitro tap, commonly known as 70/30 (70%N2 & 30% CO2). Most other kegs will be dispensed with co2 or mixed gas. Beer gas mix affects the performance and taste, you can dispense with 100% co2 but most pubs use a 50/50 mix.

The seals on on the bottom, there are two. One is on the bottom of the body and the other is on the bottom of the probe (see E in images) Put a light coat of food grade O ring lube on these. There are also two or three O rings on the probe, depending on manufacture of probe (see image D on photos). This will need to be removed from the body. Just unscrew long nut holding on the handle, pull handle from side away from the coupler and then pull probe up and out of the coupler, lightly lube the O rings and replace the probe. Make sure your beer nuts are tight and you have a washer inside the coupler (on some couplers the one way rubber valve (called a duck bill valve) also acts as a washer to seal.
