Why use a breathing valve...
The breather valve is a protective device installed on the nozzle opening on the top of the fixed roof atmospheric storage tank. Its main purpose is to prevent the tank from rupturing or imploding.
In the absence of openings or controlled openings, fixed-roof atmospheric tanks can rupture when liquid is pumped into the tank or when pressure increases due to changes in vapor pressure caused by drastic thermal changes. Implosion or collapse of the tank occurs during pumping out process or thermal change. As the liquid level decreases, the vapor space pressure decreases below atmospheric pressure.
This vacuum condition must be relieved by a controlled opening in the tank. In short, tanks need to breathe to eliminate the possibility of rupture or implosion. Due to its primary function, this valve is called a breathing valve.
Valve selection should be in accordance with American Petroleum Institute standard API 2000 or other applicable standards.
Pressure Relief / Vacuum
Pressure relief valves relieve interior tank pressure when it rises above the 14.7 PSI (1 atmosphere). Our tanks are warrantied as a low pressure system. A pressure vacuum valve prevents the interior pressure from going below -1.5 PSI and thus potentially imploding the tank. Situations where this may occur is during a quick cool down, such as after a cleaning process, or when draining quickly.

How the vent valve works..
Most atmospheric storage tanks require a vent to allow large volumes of vapor to escape at relatively low pressure. In general, allowable set pressures are given in inches of water column pressure for positive and vacuum conditions. This is because the maximum allowable working pressure of most large storage tanks is relatively low.
These tanks are typically bulk welded vessels constructed to API 650. To accommodate large volumes at low set pressures, these valves have a larger port area than the inlet or nozzle connection. The desired low setting requires weight-loaded valves rather than spring-loaded. For the reasons above, vent valves require approximately 100% over set pressure to fully open the valve.
