How Regulating Pressure Valve Works

A water pressure regulator is a dome-shaped brass fitting, usually located next to the main shut-off valve, from which the main water line enters the house. It usually has an adjustment screw on top. Internally, the water pressure regulator has a variable spring-loaded diaphragm that automatically widens and narrows based on the amount of water pressure entering the valve.

When water enters the regulator at high pressure, an internal mechanism contracts the diaphragm to narrow the flow of water. This can reduce pressure to the 50 to 80 psi range, greatly reducing stress on piping and fixtures installed behind the valve. Conversely, when the inlet water pressure drops, the chart opens wider to allow more water to flow through the valve. The adjustment screw on the top of the regulator can be tightened to increase the tension of the internal spring (thus reducing the pressure on the water as it exits the valve), or loosened to allow the water to flow more freely through the valve (thus increasing the exit pressure).

When the system is protected by a water pressure regulator, there is less pressure on the internal valves of the appliance, faucets and shutoff valves are less likely to leak, and water pressure fluctuations are fairly even.
